Myself, Ed Howard and Leonard Gardner, products of McClymonds High school 1955 in West Oakland California, are producing a 6-part mini TV documentary series about West Oakland, using the real people and their associates that grew-up in Oakland back in the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s to tell their stories at the studio of OUR T.V., Comcast Channel 78. We will provide the real insight about this time period like no one else can because we lived it.
You have seen many stories about West Oakland’s Bill Russell, the great basketball player who not only won more professional championships then anyone else and also was the first Black person to coach a major league professional sports team; Frank Robinson , baseball hall of fame and the first Black person to manage a major league baseball team; Curt Flood, baseball hall of fame and is responsible for major league baseball players and all professional sports getting payed big salaries today, sacrificed his baseball career laying the ground work for that to happen; the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, which is now around the world; Ray Norton, fastest man in the world 1960 Olympics; Jim Hinds, fastest man in the world in the 1968 Olympics; Katherine Dunham disciple Ruth Beckford, The Dancer ; the Pointer Sisters; and Paul Mooney- all of this came out of West Oakland’s small neighborhood.
We will share with you and the world coming from the mouths of the people who grew up here at that time the real stories and experiences, not the version of someone looking at us from a distance and giving you their expert opinions about Oakland, California.
The Slave System has given Oakland and most of the Black cities in our country a bad name and we do not accept that.
This will be a first and we must document this history now so you and our future generations can see and hear it from the real people because most of my generation will not be here much longer.
You can see the people mentioned above had what we called a West Oakland Attitude they took it out into the world and achieved what they did but the best kept secret is, I know this for a fact, that most of the people in West Oakland at that time had the same attitude so they were not exceptional to us. We knew their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters – we went to the same schools, had the same teachers, etc.
Join us in this very worthy cause of reaching our production goal, a simple donation of $100.00 or more can be made. You can send a check or money order payable to OURTV/West Oakland, 10700 MacArthur Blvd., Foothill Square #4e, Oakland CA 94605. Credit cards can be used through PayPal. All of this inspired directly from the West Oakland Attitude.

OPPOSITION TO THE WORD “SLAVE” GROWING
OPPOSITIONTO THE WORD “SLAVE” GROWING
Below are excerpts of the talk I gave at the Joyce Gordon Gallery Poetry Fest and Chauncey Bailey Book Fair in Oakland CA on Saturday, February19, 2011.
Based on your response and comments, we are growing but you must do better. Understand the Slave System was created for Black People and the singular word “Slave” is a powerful word in the Slave System. You must practice every day that you no longer accept the word “Slave” when it is used to describe us and our forefathers and mothers.
Keep talking about eliminating the word “Slave” every chance you get. Each time you do this you are counterfeiting the word “Slave”. If you keep doing this we can make a big change to the Slave System that has been drilled into us and all other people from every way that you can imagine.
Eevery time you keep using the singular word “Slave” as related to Black people, you are helping the Slave System.
You see how other ethnic groups come here and look down on us along with the people that are already here. Can’t you see how people will respect you more when they see us taking the lead in telling the world that we will not accept any one other than ourselves to define our past? No one can tell you you’re
forefathers and mothers were Slaves when it is obvious they were placed in a Slave System.
Why do all the books say “Slave” instead of “Slave System”? Because the word “Slave” keeps you and everyone feeling negative about us and our past and the words “Slave System” keeps you alert and reminds everyone that you know what time it is. When you show that you know what the game is then you will find that the people who are running the game will not try it on you.
let me know how you are affecting people in your area. Before you know it we will have a movement across this USA and maybe the world. We changed the word “Negro” to “Black” by refusing to be called by that name and broke down a lot of barriers in the Slave System. We can do it again especially you young people.
I am calling on you and all Black educators, business people, writers, actors, poets, entertainers, hip hop, activist, commentators, spoken word, etc. to join with me using your skills to put the word out that we will not accept the word “SLAVE “any more.
